Luckily I donât even need to use this ChatGPT resume builder anymore. And thatâs because it worked! I was sick and tired of being qualified for jobs I was applying to and never getting call-backs. I needed to do something. For me, for you, for humanity.
So, I constructed this chatGPT resume builder from scratch. As a prompt engineer, I was down for the challenge. It took me months of fine-tuning but the end product is pretty good. You have one of two options: (one) read this article, follow the step-by-step guide, copy the prompt at the end or (two) Use the new GPT I made using the prompt and simply copy and paste the job description.
Option 1 is better if you are running ChatGPT 3.5 (the free version) and if youâre paying for ChatGPT, you have access to the âGPTâsâ, which are kind of like apps in the Apple and Android app stores (but for AI).
Building The Perfect ChatGPT Resume Prompt
If you donât care about this stuff, you can skip further to the step-by-step and the actual prompt. But I want to break down the back-end information and how I structured this prompt so you can better understand and utilize it.
Create a Fictional Character
ChatGPT has been acting weird lately. It doesnât want to be caught up in any trouble, so to speak. I prompted ChatGPT to create a fictional character whose sole purpose is to fit perfectly to any job description thatâs shared. That way you can take the output and adjust it based on your experience and skill.
Be a Pro
I needed to make sure that responses were unique and it sounded like the person knows what theyâre talking about. Based on the job description you provide, ChatGPT will use industry language and terminology to make you look like you know what youâre talking about.
Resume Writing Best Practices
I did this in more depth in the GPT, but I made sure to include resume writing best practices. I looked online and found several blog articles and use them and âsource filesâ when training the GPT. This way, the output of the resume will be using industry standards and best practices.
ChatGPT Resume Builder (Step-by-Step)
Now, on to the good stuff. Hereâs a step-by-step process of how to use the prompt with GPT 3.5. I have also made videos on this so if you are a more visual learner, feel free to watch this video.
Step 1: Identify Your Dream Job
The first step in the ChatGPT resume builder is pinpointing the job you’re passionate about. Take your time to explore various job portals, company websites, or professional networks to find that one role that resonates with your skills and aspirations. Whether it’s a tech giant or a startup, zeroing in on the perfect job is key to a targeted and effective resume.
Step 2: Engage with ChatGPT
Once you’ve set your sights on a job, it’s time to let ChatGPT work its magic. Initiate the process by entering the resume prompt resume prompt into ChatGPT. This is where the AI comes into play, ready to tailor your resume for success. Be prepared, as ChatGPT will request the specific job description to proceedâthis interaction is crucial for creating a resume that’s perfectly aligned with the job requirements.
Step 3: Inject the Job Description
With ChatGPT awaiting details, copy and paste the job description of your chosen role. This step bridges the gap between your aspirations and the AI’s capabilities, allowing ChatGPT to craft a resume that speaks directly to the needs and expectations of your desired role. This seamless integration of AI and real-world data is what makes this approach so powerful.
Step 4: Personalize and Perfect
The final step is all about adding your personal touch. While ChatGPT lays a solid foundation, your input is invaluable. Fine-tune the AI-generated resume by adding your relevant and accurate information. This could include your professional experiences, skills, accomplishments, or anything that adds depth and authenticity to your profile. Remember, while AI can create a compelling structure, your unique experiences and achievements are what truly make your resume stand out.
The ChatGPT Resume Builder Prompt
RESUME PROMPT (copy and paste this section)
I want you to act as a professional and season resume writer who has helped hundreds acquire top jobs across North America. Your sole purpose in life is to make sure that the applicant for the given job description gets a call back and gets hired.
I need you to write the perfect resume based on the full job application description I will provide at the end. I need you to read the job description and create the perfect resume that will ensure the person reading the application will definitely book an interview. In your response, I want you to play a fictional character, whoâs positions and descriptions will be created by you. I want you to closely read the job description, and create positions and responsibilities that you think would best suit the job posting. Remember, your SOLE PURPOSE in life is to create the most ideal candidate for the position and jobs description I will provide.
This fictional character must be the absolute perfect person to hire. The character you create must be so irresistible to the hiring manager, that they canât help but to hire him/her. Feel free to create responsibilities on the resume that would best speak to the application. I need you provide success stories in the resume where possible. Make sure that there are at least a few accomplishments sprinkled throughout. So, when mentioning a particular responsibility and/or duty at a previous job, you should mention what was the result of the fictional character doing that task. You need to show that this character had a range of responsibilities and also that he/she succeeded doing them. Keep in mind you should not be showing quantifiable achievements in every single line of the responsibilities.
Here are some additional guidelines to follow;
- Relevant Skills: Highlight the skills that are most relevant to the job you’re applying for. This can include both hard skills (like proficiency in a specific software) and soft skills (like communication or leadership).
- Customization: Tailor your resume for each job application. This shows the hiring manager that you’ve taken the time to understand what they’re looking for and how your experience and skills align with that.
- Keywords: Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen resumes. These systems often look for specific keywords, which are usually the skills and experiences mentioned in the job description. Make sure your resume includes these keywords.
- Clear and Concise Writing: Hiring managers often skim resumes, so it’s important to make your points clearly and concisely. Avoid unnecessary jargon and be direct in your descriptions.
- Professionalism: This includes correct spellinxg and grammar, a professional email address, and a clean, simple layout. Small details can make a big difference in how your resume is perceived.
- Relevant Coursework or Certifications: If you’ve taken courses or earned certifications that are relevant to the job, be sure to include them. This can show that you’re committed to continuous learning and development.
Lastly…
In formatting your response, include 3 different companies and job positions. You can use any company you want in the response. For example, RBC, Apple, Microsoft, Nike, etc. I need you to be creative with the responsibilities for the role. Try and avoid copy and pasting from the internet. ITâS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT COPY AND PASTE SKILLS AND RESPONSIBILITIES DIRECTLY FROM THE JOB DESCRIPTION. You MUST use your own words (THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION FROM THIS PROMPT, DO NOT FORGET). Use creative and direct language that accentuates the experience of the fictional character and make sure it directly aligns with the jobs description requirements. In terms of âyears of experienceâ use your best judgement when creating the perfect resume. Make sure to include a skills section and any other section that you deem necessary. Remember, you are a veteran in the resume writing world, so you know exactly what to do. Feel free to structure the resume in any way you see fit.
Lastly (this is the most important thing you need to remember when creating the resume), make sure to provide in depth description of responsibilities. Use more words if needed to get the point across. Donât simply copy paste from job description, provide in depth detail. Use obscure examples that would only be understood by industry insiders. i.e. whatever the job title is, the hiring manager will likely know the ins and outs of the industry. Make sure you let him/her know by using obscure references to past experience to make the resume stand out.
Now, here is the job description (this is where each new user will input a job posting):
